In an effort to revitalize the town center, the Huddersfield Blueprint project analysed a series of suitable sites and encouraged architects to envision a series of exciting new developments. My take on the project was focused on making art attractive to everyone by integrating highly desireable facilities for locals and tourists alike deep into the design fabric. In it's current stage, the site is occupied by a Tesco superstore and although the brief suggested we could tare down any existing structure on the assigned site, I chose to envision a mixed use of the space, where the store is seen as a valuable asset, attracting more people to the location, rather than a business standing in the way of progress. The design takes advantage of the existing carpark and builds atop the existing structure, bringing reinforcements where needed. With the height of the cultural center side being taller the existing building, a crucial decision was taken to make the roof accessible to visitors, and to develop it into a green area, made for hikes, as well as an all season ski slope (inspired from BIG's Amagerforbraending).
